It is hard to overstate how little adult entertainment from the pre-VCR era (1960-1985) has in common with the ugly, false junk that is contemporary pornography. Pre-1985 sex films are not all great works of art but even the most blunt and perfunctory 1970s sex film contains some trace of the mystery of sex; some sense of passion, rapture, danger, fulfillment, expression... something. One reason is that the 1970s performers and directors grew up in a world without explicit adult films and were thus drawing to some degree on real sexual experience.

Vintage adult films are valuable because 1) they were a subset of all international cinema, 2) many of them were made with clear artistic intent 3) they provide a record of sexual culture from an era that was, arguably, less pathological than our own and 4) they are human-made artworks that many people enjoy. That last is all the justification the genre requires.

If I seem to be defending these movies it is because they are what's always under attack. If Tarzan movies or Val Lewton horror films faced the same attacks we would all find ourselves defending them, rather than discussing them. The defensive posture is dictated by others. I am not interested in justifying old adult films any more than I am interested in justifying scrimshaw or macramé. I am, however, interested in seeing how these works fit into the big picture.

I don't know of a 1970s adult movie I would call a great film but some 1970s adult films are good movies–in the top 50% of all films. I'd guess that America and Europe combined to make a few hundred adult movies that are better than the average movie. Hundreds more exceed the minimal "real movie" standard set by THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD (1957) or John Wayne's THE TELEGRAPH TRAIL (1932). (More)
