| | BOYS DON'T CRY is smart, funny, fast-paced, sexy and a beautiful love story. Hillary Swank delivered the Oscar winning performance of a lifetime as a skinny likeable Jimmy Stewart type fella named Brandon Teena, who is actually a woman named Teena Brandon. Brandon has perpetual problems with the law and the outraged friends and relatives of his girlfriends, though it's not clear how much of this hostility springs from homophobia versus an understandable distaste for seduction under false pretenses (which seems like a form of rape, doesn't it?) We see Brandon's amazing dress-up transformation into a boy (complete with rubber appendage), improbable skills as a pick-up artist at the local roller-rink, and eventual blossoming romance with Lana (Chloe Sevigny, who makes the word "beautiful" inadequate). When the pair make love it's among the most erotically touching love scenes ever filmed. Sevigny's "stand-by-your-man" attitude in the face of her slow realization of the truth is exciting drama.
