| | Remarkable movie that practically invented the modern naturalistic yet surreal small-town drug/crime genre. Both Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch's best work. "Bob (Dillon) is a high-functioning junkie who masterminds small-town pharmacy robberies for a group including his wife (Lynch) and another addicted couple (James LeGros, Heather Graham) When he has a brush with death, Bob realizes he must leave both his addiction and his wife if he wants to survive. When I saw this in '89 I expected Gus Van Sant to be one of the great directors of the 1990s. Oh, well. It's a miracle to make even one movie this good. (I haven't seen ELEPHANT yet) With James LeGros, Heather Graham and William S. Burroughs, who is pretty good.
