The search will not accept any punctuation marks, just letters and numerals.

This is an "OR" search so you can enter one word in both fields. (Putting different search terms in different fields will probably not yield useful results.) Complete words make your search more precise but the computer doesn't care and will accept any string of letters. For example, searching for "can" returns American, Canadian and even Scandinavian.
