Recommended This movie, BODY LOVE and SENSATIONS make up Braun's good stuff, and all three belong on a list of the best adult films ever. In making his one great American film Braun sought out American stars who could act. The intellectual and emotional demands of a Braun role are way over the heads of most adult film stars. Veronica Hart was the best actress of the US sex stars (Her only competition would have been Georgina Spelvin, but Hart is a lot prettier) and Lysa Thatcher is an adequate actress. Richard Bolla can act some, too. Veronica Hart met the father of her children (the lighting guy, I think) working on this film, and their sincere love affair blossomed amid an atmosphere she describes as somewhat chaotic, with Braun treating the actresses as his own sexual game preserve. That atmosphere may have enhanced Hart's performance as a proper (hung-up?) young woman surrounded by rampant amoral 1970s style sex. She cannot go anywhere without walking in on people enjoying the freest kind of free love. When she complains about her boyfriend having prostitutes over to their house, he encourages her to find a lover. Her own father suggests she join in some swinging sex with his wife. Braun's most interesting character is always the woman who won't be fully revealed until the final reel – Briggitte Maier in Sensations, Catherine Ringer in Body Love, and Veronica Hart here. The showstopper of American Desire doesn't even involve Hart, though. R. Bolla picks up a submissive hippie hitchhiker played to spooky perfection by Lysa Thatcher, and they have a sexual encounter in a renovated barn that is an erotically and emotionally complex story within the story. Thatcher is in complete control of her own desires, and paradoxically assertive in her wish to be sexually submissive. Braun was essentially a free-love revolutionary, and this sequence is a manifesto. |
