The original release of BUTTERFLIES (Sarno's directors cut) is technically hardcore in a brief glancing way. The actors were actually having sex but the mechanics of things were not shown graphically. Then a XXX edit was released for exhibition in American adult theatres with explicit insert shots done with a Forsa body double. This new DVD release is from the company that has the negatives and the quality is MUCH higher than any previous home video release.

Though all of Forsa's genital close-ups in the XXX version are actually a body double, it's an excellent match for her body. And the matching of poses, costumes, settings and lighting are extraordinary. The actors (Eric Edwards and Harry Reems) are used in the inserts, which certainly helps polish the illusion. Since the inserts are shot with the same male actors in the same settings and the costumes match perfectly it seems likely that the inserts were shot at the same time as the original footage.

In general, the original soft version is a superior film, but there is nothing much more entertaining than watching both versions and comparing them. When hardcore footage is inserted into a softcore film, the running time of the sex scene in question generally stays the same, because the soundtrack is not edited - too complicated. As a result, Marie Forsa's unbelievable moans and cries persist through the hardcore shots, and one should NEVER underestimate the erotic power of sound. Basically, you cannot go wrong with either version, and fortunately this DVD set contains both.

Universally considered one of the great soft-x films. According to Luke Ford, porno historian Jim Holliday calls this Joe Sarno masterpiece is the most erotic non-explicit film ever made. In these later sexploitation films Sarno often had the actors really "doing it" but filmed the scenes in a soft-x way, and it's pretty powerful.

Rebecca Brooke (FELICIA, PUNISHMENT OF ANNE) and Eric Edwards (BUTTERFLIES) are a seemingly happy couple in New York, except for the stresses of an open marriage and the fact that Brooke's constant companion is her little lesbian buddy who sometimes looks so much like Rosanna Arquette it's distracting . So, following Sarno's favorite storyline, a sexually charged female has to come visit to shake up everything in their household. That female arrives in the form of Brooke's mother, played by veteran sexploitation star and one of the first porn stars, pneumatic blonde Jennifer Welles. Soon there are some other folks in the mix and everyone in the busy household is engaging in the Sarno trademark masturbation while either listening through the walls to people screwing, or standing outside in the hall watching them through a small crack in the door.

Mom works her way through everyone in sight and eventually everyone has checked everyone else off their scorecards.

The bonus material is first rate. You know how a lot of DVDs contain "deleted scenes" and they turn out to be scenes of someone checking the mail or eating a plate of scrambled eggs? The three deleted scenes included on this disc are actually extra footage from sex scenes that were trimmed for length. And there's a bonus CD of music from Sarno films.

Deep Throat Part 2 (1974) has a weird back-story. Joe Sarno, one of the very best erotica directors of all time, did a few XXX projects in the 1970s. He was hired to make the DEEP THROAT sequel and it was shot as a regular XXX film. Then, as with FLESH GORDON, everyone realized they could make more money cutting it down to an R-rating and releasing it nationally. So DEEP THROAT II was released as a softcore film. All the XXX footage was subsequently stolen, so all that exists of the film is the release print, presented here in excellent quality. The overall production is just what one would expect from Sarno. It's handsome. Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems reprise their roles from the original, joined by sex-film stalwarts like Andrea True, Jamie Gillis, Marc Stevens and Tina Russell. If the IMDB is to be believed popular 1990s comic Judy Tenuta (the self-proclaimed "goddess" with the accordion) plays, at eighteen, one of the office girls.

Also, Linda Lovelace for President (1975) (released in England as "Hot Neon") a trying-too-hard camp cash-in on her notoriety directed by TV hack Claudio Guzman (Far-Out Space Nuts, Partridge Family, etc..) with a freak-show cast including Linda Lovelace playing herself, Fuddle Bagley (what a name!), Micky Dolenz (of The Monkees), Scatman Crothers, Robbie Lee and poor Vaughn Meader (who had the best-selling comedy album of all time until Steve Martin came along.) The movie is full of utterly hollow political symbolism and insincere counter-culture references. This is a must-have for aficionados of appalling psychotronica. Since this contains two full length R-rated sexploitation features I am cross-filing it in American Sexploitation. But because an XXX movie manufacturer produces the disc the bonus material is hard-core, including some terrible grainy old Linda Lovelace loops and miscellaneous XXX trailers. So you are forewarned. I am delighted to note that this company did not spoil the package by including any Lovelace loop material that would cause me to not carry the package at all. (She did some notoriously nasty loop work, but it's not presented here.

PASSION IN HOT HOLLOWS (1966) This manufacturer's description is a bit overheated for a movie that's not very explicit, but these early Sarno films really are sordid:

"Norma Sue and her punk paramour, Parker (a "stud bull"), arrive in her hometown of Hot Hollows intent on corrupting its citizenry. They converge on the ramshackle inn owned by Norma Sue's widowed and sexually repressed sister Jean, their primary target. Meanwhile, local slacker Billy Joe romances impoverished young immigrant Anna. Billy Joe's unsatisfied cocktail-hostess wife, Linda Lu, locks loins with lanky Luke Herman, his best friend, in a nearby barn. Later, Billy Joe convinces the naive Anna to turn tricks for the locals. Back at the inn, Parker and Norma Sue seduce hot-to-trot hostess Linda Lu. To break down Jean's resistance, Norma Sue appeals to her latent voyeurism: while watching her sister and Parker balling in her barn, Jean feverishly caresses her own body in one of renowned director JOE SARNO's most erotically-charged sequences."

"From there, the plot sickens. With Parker's aid, Norma Sue defiles reluctant prostitute Anna in a shocking sequence. The concupiscent couple cap off their reign of terror by forcing the unwilling Jean into a foursome with the insatiable Linda Lu. And then, abruptly, the dysfunctional duo departs for further debaucheries without leaving so much as a business card.

Released the year after his breakthrough feature Inga (1968), Passion in Hot Hollows is directed with Sarno's usual resourcefulness and attention to craft. The crisp cinematography and expressionistic lighting recalls the look of classic film noir. And dig those crazy bongos during the sex scenes! With Britt Hansen, Lola Valentine, Charlie Dobson.

A high-water mark of the effort to make XXX movies comparable to the lesser mainstream B-movies. The sets and costumes of the many pulp fiction fantasy sequences are impressive - quality you'd associate with a eurotrash knock-off of a Hollywood hit, which is low by Hollywood standards but phenomenal for an American XXX film. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK inspired stuff, medieval stuff... Everything from a prehistoric cave woman to luscious blonde nazi submarine commander.

Attractive cast and great visuals, though the overall narrative seems disjointed. "Pulp magazine writer, voluptuous Jennifer Nash, transports her latest characters to wild orgasmic adventures. Beautiful Rhode Island Red and her male companion Louisiana Smith and Oklahoma Crude experience pleasures on this earth and beyond."
