About Atomic Cinema |
I love this picture! Klimt died before it was finished but even with one hand this Eve is the most sweetly erotic human creation this side of Maureen O'Sullivan's skinny-dipping scenes in TARZAN AND HIS MATE. | This is an anachronistic crazy-guy-on-the-internet site disguised as a DVD store. I am trying to do some good here–promoting some favorite ideas, putting asynchronous movies together to see how they look side by side, griping about pet peeves and tossing out amusing scraps of information where available. I'm a great fan of those quirky hardware stores (every town has one of these) that stay in business forever out of sheer cussedness, seemingly oblivious to giant Home Depot style operations right down the street. An Internet micro-business ought to be distinctive so I just do whatever comes to mind. I don't know why there's a Franka Potente section... one day I just felt like supporting the general idea of Franka Potente. The reviews are often contradictory. 90% of the time I write whatever crosses my mind the day the title comes in and if I'm in a bad mood I might say something snarky that will then stay in place for years. C'est la vie. If there were formal criteria here they'd look like this:
Two out of three is pretty good. All other things being equal, off-beat is a virtue. A mediocre weird movie is more interesting than a mediocre normal movie. Growing up with television has given me that video ennui where it feels like I've seen everything so I value oddity. There are some movies here I don’t even like but at least they're experimental or foreign or scandalous or unpopular or in some other way different. My concept of this place goes off in several directions. I want to highlight mainstream movies I happen to like, document some of the history of sensuality in film and film censorship, offer a good selection of atypical genre movies, and help popularize some movies I love.
