About this page...

Some of these directors like Luna, Pasolini, Bertolucci, Clark and Breillat are mainstream/art-house directors noted for their erotic daring. Others are directors associated primarily with 1970s theatrical adult films or primarily with 1960s soft core exploitation movies.

Some of these directors aren't easy to pigeon-hole because their careers don't fit into conventional categories. Genre straddling directors like Metzger, Pecas, Rollin and Sarno are what led to Atomic Cinema. I was irritated that it's all but impossible to shop for those people's movies in any coherent way.

Max Pecas is a good example: he spent 20+ years making erotically themed theatrical films. All of his films were daring for their time. The specific content of his films changed from year, following the prevailing fashions of the day.

He began his career making Elke Sommer movies like Daniella by Night (1961) that were scandalous at the time but can be shown on broadcast TV today.

In the 1960s and early 1970s he was making handsome artsy-erotica like Claude et Greta (1970)

During the 1970s he made some first-rate explicit adult films like Felicia (1975) and Sweet Taste of Honey (1976)

Pecas was always the same artist. But now, a generation later, if you get interested in Max Pecas you'll have a hard time finding his movies in one place because the movie marketplace has been arbitrarily segregated based on content. And the situation is the same for dozens of other interesting directors.

For all it's limitations, the auteur theory is the most useful approach to film. It is wrong-headed to divide up a director's oeuvre by content.
