Leroi started in the film business as Claude Chabrol's assistant in 1962, directed some dramatic films in the 1960s and started making sophisticated erotic movies like EMMANUELLE 2 in the 1970s. For a few years in the late 1970s and very early 1980s Leroi directed explicit films. at precisely the peak of the adult film in France. As the French adult industry started turning to crap he returned to sophisticated softcore, directed most of the later EMMANUELLE films. Leroi's career is not that unusual. At the height of the adult film's prestige a lot of people of ability tried their hand at the genre. It seemed a reasonable thing to do. With hind-sight we can say that the porn movie is an artistically doomed genre but the people living the late 1970s day-to-day did not know that and the stigma was, for a brief time, surprisingly low. DODO PETITES FILLES AU BORDEL 1980. The standard French erotic story is "the education of a young woman," a formula that never gets tired because it provides a simple narrative structure, an evolving protagonist, and inherent erotic suspense (almost a striptease), because we know that each scene of the heroine will be more revealing or intense. Perhaps dating is a better analogy . it's a good structure for the most intriguing woman to not go "all the way" until the end.
